Long-tailed ducks winters often far from the shore on for example offshore mussel banks. They may dive to a depth of 40 meters. Usually they dive to a depth of 10-25 meters during foraging.

In late winter and spring flocks are more often seen close to land.


Blue mussels between 5 and  25 mm in length are the main food for Long-tailed ducks during winter in the central Baltic Sea.  Maximal size of blue mussels in central baltic Sea is about 35 mm.

Oil damaged long-tailed ducks are often found sitting on land. After a short period they starve and freeze to death. Tens of thousands of long-tailed ducks are hit by illegal oil spills from ships every year.
